I have a query regarding the ports I need to open up on my firewall in order to allow ftps traffic; I've opened 990 but wondered if I needed to also make anything else available.

For FTPS, the data connection may need to open ports from 10,000 to 32,000

Is there any way that the range can be controlled or limited in some way?

Yes, you can specifically limit the port ranges using the account manager wizard
